To be is to have, says the system. And the system is a trap: the more you have, the more you want; people end up belonging to things and working for them. Consumer lifestyle, which is becoming the only lifestyle anywhere, makes time a scarce and expensive resource: time is sold, rented, invested. But who is the owner of time? Automobiles, television sets, VCRs, personal computers, cellular phones, and all the other countersigns of happiness. Machines created to save time or pass the time, seize control of time. --Eduardo Galeano from "Juarez, the Laboratory of our Future"

Not to mention the negative effects on the planet that are caused by producing all that crap that people don't need.

This is so true Suible. The older I get the more I feel weighed down by all this stuff. We are not any happier now with more stuff, than we were when we had less. Stuff does not make us happy, stuff takes time away from what does make us happy, the people in our lives. Thanks for sharing this it really speaks to me.

A person of the USA who is considered poor by today's standards would have been a very wealthy person back in acient Greece.
